Legislation designed to protect journalists’ confidential sources from being exposed in open court is progressing toward becoming law as the Senate prepares to vote on its version of the shield law. The House passed a version of the bill in March, but objections from the White House and others wary of its national security implications had stalled the Senate’s progress until this month, when a committee approved key elements of the measure. For months, billboard ads have blanketed the nation’s capital, declaring that “Adobe Opens Up Washington” and extolling the virtues of the company and its electronic document format, the pdf. TSA officials say that a “full review” is underway to determine how a 2008 copy of its standard operating procedures for all airport security checkpoints was released in its entirety on the Internet. The document was “improperly redacted,” according to TSA officials, meaning that with a few keystrokes what was once secret spilled out into the public domain. Read the rest of this entry »
